Understanding & Easing Pet Separation Anxiety

Imagine you’re about to step out for a well-deserved break, but your furry friend gives you a look of terror that screams, “Don’t go!” Sound familiar? Separation anxiety in pets can be tough to figure out, but with a touch of love and a lot of understanding, we can help our beloved companions feel more at ease when we’re not around.

Causes of Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety can show up in pets for a myriad of reasons. A shift in routine, a new home, or the loss of a loved one can all stir up feelings of unease. Some pets are simply more sensitive souls, becoming extra attached to their humans and feeling a world of worry when left alone.

Signs of Separation Anxiety

Our pets may not speak our language (not exactly anyway), but they certainly know how to show distress. Keep an eye out for excessive barking or whining, chewing up your favorite shoes, sudden accidents in the house, or even frantic escape attempts. These can all be cries for help from a furry loved one dealing with separation anxiety.

The Wonder of Animal Intuition & Energy Work

As an animal intuitive and communicator, I can offer unique support for pets dealing with separation anxiety. Through intuitive communication, I connect with your pet on a deeper level, understanding their specific fears and triggers. This insight allows us to address the root causes of their anxiety more effectively.

Energy work, such as Reiki, can also be incredibly beneficial. By channeling calming energy, I can help soothe your pet's nervous system, promoting relaxation and a sense of security. Regular energy sessions can help re-balance and harmonize your pet’s energy, reducing their overall anxiety levels.

How It Works

When I work with a pet, the first step is to establish a connection and communicate with them intuitively. I can sense their emotions and understand what might be causing their distress. This connection allows me to provide targeted energy healing, focusing on areas where they need the most support.

During an energy session, your pet can remain in their favorite spot to receive the energy. Whether done remotely or in person, many pets show remarkable improvement after just a few sessions, becoming more relaxed and secure when left alone.

Consult Your Vet

I recommend that you contact your vet as part of determining what’s causing your pet’s separation anxiety. Sometimes, underlying health issues can masquerade as anxiety. Ruling out any medical concerns ensures that you’re addressing the possible physical and non-physical causes of your pet’s distress.

Conventional Approaches That May Help

1. Create a Safe Space: Designate a cozy, secure area where your pet feels safe. This could be a crate, a specific room, or a snug bed that becomes their sanctuary. It is a place where they have constant access to come and go as they please.

2. Gradual Departure Training: Think of it as training wheels for their alone time adventures. Start with short absences and gradually increase the duration. There are plenty of specifics that can be shared about this, however,  here’s how it goes in a nutshell: Begin by leaving your pet alone for just a minute while you step into another room (or you get something from the car). Tell your pet you will return in 1 minute before you leave and be sure to only be gone 1 minute. Slowly, over days and weeks, extend these periods, always returning with a calm and positive demeanor. This way, your pet learns that you always come back, and their anxiety starts to ease.

3. Provide Distractions and/or Mental Stimulation: Fill their time with toys, puzzle feeders, and interactive games. Keeping their minds busy can turn their focus away from the fact that you’re not there.

4. Exercise: A well-exercised pet is a much happier, relaxed pet. Make sure your furry friend gets plenty of physical and mental stimulation before you head out the door.

5. Calming Products: From calming sprays to anxiety wraps, these products can add an extra layer of comfort and calm to your pet’s day. Calming sprays, often made with natural ingredients like lavender or chamomile, can be spritzed around their resting area to create a soothing environment. Anxiety wraps, like Thundershirts, gently apply pressure to your pet’s body, similar to a comforting hug, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. There are also calming treats and supplements designed to promote relaxation. These products can be a wonderful addition to your efforts, providing that extra bit of reassurance and peace your pet might need.

Separation anxiety in pets is a challenging condition, but with patience, understanding, and the right support, it can be managed effectively. By combining conventional approaches with the unique benefits of animal intuition and energy work, your beloved fur family can feel more secure and at ease when they are on their own.

If your furry loved one is grappling with separation anxiety, consider exploring these holistic approaches. Each pet is unique in their needs and emotions, and finding the right balance of support can make all the difference for their well-being.
